Tarlak (Philippine Islands), 23rd September, 1899. To All Civilized Nations and Especially to the Great North American republic. I dedicate to you this modest work with a view to informing you respecting the international events which have occurred during the past three years and are still going on in the Philippines, in order that you may be fully acquainted with the facts and be thereby placed in a position to pronounce judgment upon the issue and be satisfied and assured of the Justice which forms the basis and is in fact the foundation of our Cause. I place the simple truth respectfully before and dedicate it to you as an act of homage and as testimony of my admiration for and recognition of the wide knowledge, the brilliant achievements and the great power of other nations, whom I salute, in the name the Philippine nation, with every effusion of my soul. The Author. Chapter I. The Revolution of 1896 Spain maintained control of the Philippine Islands for more than three centuries and a half, during which period the tyranny, misconduct and abuses of the Friars and the Civil and Military Administration exhausted the patience of the natives and caused them to make a desperate effort to shake off the unbearable galling yoke on the 26th and 31st August, 1896, then commencing the revolution in the provinces of Manila and Cavite.

True Version of the Philippine Revolution Don Emilio Aguinaldo y Famy 9781541325654 Books Reviews

This is a fantastic book to read. All the making for a great movie. My wife is a great-grandauther of the first president of the Philippines (from 1899 to 1901). His name was Emilio Aguinaldo. The United States took control of the Philippines in 1901 under great protest. At least they got the rule under Spain out after 310 years.
Gives a direct indication of the "other side" of the Philippine Insurrection. Other authors refer to Aguinaldo's role in the conflict between the United States and its conquest of the islands, but here the dictator tells the story as he said it happened.
Outstanding account of the Philippine Revolution. This does not appear in history books, and it should! It would help if the book indicated somewhere who translated it. I believe Emilio Aguinaldo did not speak or write English.
President Aguinaldo tells his side of what happened from his perspective. While I am sure it accurately reflects what he said, saw, and heard, there were other forces in the Philippines in pitched battle with US forces and there were atrocities on both sides. That some US military and political leaders were duplicitous is likely, but so were some Filipino political, military, and business leaders. One positive result was that the Philippines entered the 20th century with a "fatherly" US to give the country legal, banking, education, and political systems over the next 30 years. Was it pretty? Not so much, but the result was to position the Philippines for the future. If Aguinaldo's side of the story is the only history you read of that time, then you should read other documents. Building a nation is hard work, is difficult for many, requires change, and there will be losses. I usually ask people to compare the US in the Philippines and Afghanistan and Iraq. In the long run, the Philippines was a success...the book is still to be written on Afghanistan and Iraq. I wonder what President Aguinaldo would think of his country today....
Many events of the Philippine Revolution...picturing in my mind the way they unfolded and how different some of those venues are today.....brought back to mind how stirred I was when I (frequently) passed by Aguinaldo's familial home.
